The Viper came on the scene on January 4th, 1989 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It was in concept form aimed at testing the public reaction. The result was astounding!
The Viper, when first conceived, was never intended or even imagined to have had the life-span that it has been able to achieve. Chrylser originally designed the car to go from 0 to 100 and back to 0 in under 15 seconds. They were also in need of a flashy, muscle car that could turn heads and revitalize the Chrysler name. The viper accomplished this and more, and became the most sought after Chrysler vehicle up to that period.

Chrysler created an RT/10 group. Their goal was to create a platform that would align the vehicle more for the track rather than the road. The vehicle would still have normal-driving characteristics, but its heart and sould would be breed for track-use.

The VM01 Concept was the first Viper ever produced. It was built in a shop borrowed from Chrysler's Jeep division. The car featured fiberglass panels painted white and did not have the sport bar featured on later concept and production versions.
